We wrote a whole love letter to the marine layer back in July, and everything in it still holds — the fog really was doing your garden a favor all summer. But there is a reason locals treat September like a reward: this is roughly when the fog engine that ran all July and August starts running out of steam. The result is stretches of genuinely clear, warm, low-70s-to-80s days that summer on the Peninsula rarely delivers in a row.
It is not a coincidence that so many people who grew up here describe September and October as their actual favorite months, not June or July. The ocean temperature that drives the summer fog machine takes time to catch up to the season, and by the time it does, the fog it was generating has mostly moved on.
